Why I Don’t Offer Orbeez Filled Tumblers at CK Sparkle
Share
If you’ve ever scrolled TikTok, you’ve probably seen those clear tumblers filled with colorful water beads, often called “Orbeez.” They look bright, bouncy, and fun.
And yes, I’ve had customers ask if I can make one.
But after testing, researching, and thinking about long-term quality, I’ve made the decision that I won’t be offering Orbeez-filled tumblers at CK Sparkle. Here’s exactly why.
What Are Orbeez and Why Are They Popular in Tumblers?
“Orbeez” are small super-absorbent polymer beads that expand dramatically when soaked in water. They start tiny and grow into soft, squishy spheres.
They’re popular in DIY tumblers because they:
- Create a colorful, floating look
- Move around when shaken
- Photograph well for social media
I totally understand the appeal. They’re eye-catching.
But eye-catching and long-lasting are two very different things.
1. Expansion Can Crack Double-Wall Tumblers
Orbeez expand when exposed to liquid. That expansion is unpredictable over time.
In a sealed double wall tumbler, there’s limited space. If the beads continue absorbing moisture or weren’t fully stabilized before sealing, they can:
- Press outward on the cup walls
- Create stress fractures
- Crack acrylic over time
I use double-wall tumblers designed to hold decorative fillers safely between the walls. I won’t risk structural integrity for a trend.
“But There’s No Extra Water in Mine…”
I’ve heard this one a lot.
Some makers say they fully expand the beads first, remove excess water, and seal the chamber tightly so there’s “no extra water” left inside.
Here’s the issue.
Even if you fully hydrate the beads, drain visible water, and pack them tightly, there is still internal moisture inside each bead. That’s how they stay expanded.
Over time, small changes in temperature, air pressure, seal integrity, or microscopic condensation can reintroduce moisture movement inside the chamber.
Hydrogel beads are designed to respond to moisture. That’s literally what they’re made to do. So even in what looks like a perfectly dry, tightly packed chamber, long-term expansion and contraction is still possible.
In a rigid acrylic double-wall tumbler, even slight pressure changes matter.
I build my cups for real life. Car heat. Cold weather. Travel. Shipping. Storage. I can’t guarantee that a sealed Orbeez tumbler will behave the same way six months from now.
So I choose not to offer it at all.
2. They Break Down Over Time
Water beads aren’t permanent.
Over time they can:
- Shrink
- Cloud the liquid
- Break apart
- Lose their smooth texture
That means the beautiful look you ordered may not look the same months later. And that’s not the kind of quality I stand behind.
When you order a custom tumbler from me, I want it to look just as gorgeous months from now as it did the day you opened it.
3. Long Term Safety Matters
Even though the filler in a double-wall tumbler does not touch the drinking chamber, I prefer to use materials that are food-safe and stable.
Orbeez style beads:
- Are not intended for sealed decorative drinkware
- Can grow mold if moisture levels fluctuate
- Are difficult to fully sanitize once sealed
4. Movement Isn’t Always a Good Thing
One of the biggest appeals of Orbeez tumblers is movement.
But movement also means shifting.
When fillers shift, they can:
- Leave empty gaps
- Settle unevenly
- Create pressure points
I specialize in snow globe glitter, mica shimmer, color shift, glow, UV-reactive options, and other custom fills that are designed for long-term stability. They’re formulated to flow or suspend intentionally without stressing the cup walls.
If I can’t guarantee the performance, I won’t offer it.
A Quick Note to Other Creators and Customers
I want to be clear about something.
This is not a judgment on other makers who offer Orbeez tumblers, and it’s not a criticism of customers who love them.
There’s absolutely room in the market for trendy, short term, fun statement pieces. Some customers fully understand that a design might have a shorter lifespan and are totally comfortable with that.
That’s okay.
Every maker runs their business differently. Every customer values different things.
For me personally, my brand is built around durability, stability, and materials I feel 100% confident sealing inside a double-wall tumbler. If I can’t confidently stand behind how it will perform over time, I simply choose not to offer it.
It’s about alignment with my standards, not superiority.
What I Offer Instead: Safer, Long Lasting Fill Styles
If you love color and dimension, you have so many options:
- Snow globe glitter suspensions
- Holographic and iridescent blends
- Mica shimmer liquids
- Color shift glitter
- Glow in the dark fills
- UV sunlight reactive styles
All filling is included with your tumbler purchase on eligible double wall styles, and I always match the fill to the size and structure of the cup.
If you’re unsure what would look best, just leave a note at checkout. I’ll coordinate details with you so the final design feels intentional and beautiful.
Frequently Asked Questions About Orbeez Tumblers
Are Orbeez tumblers safe?
They can be decorative, but they are not designed specifically for sealed drinkware chambers. Because they rely on moisture to maintain their shape, long term stability can be unpredictable.
If the beads are fully expanded first, won’t that prevent cracking?
Fully expanding beads reduces immediate growth, but it does not eliminate internal moisture, pressure changes, or environmental factors that can impact them over time.
Do Orbeez eventually shrink?
Yes. Hydrogel beads can shrink if moisture evaporates and expand again if moisture is reintroduced. That expansion and contraction cycle is exactly what makes them risky in a sealed double wall tumbler.
Can mold grow inside an Orbeez tumbler?
If moisture is present and the environment allows it, microbial growth is possible. Once sealed, the interior chamber cannot be cleaned or sanitized.
Will you ever offer Orbeez filled tumblers?
Unless there’s a major change in materials that makes them stable and safe for long term sealed use, I don’t plan to add them to my lineup.
What’s the best alternative if I want movement?
Snow globe glitter suspensions and shimmer liquid fills give you beautiful movement without the expansion risk of hydrogel beads.
